One of the medium format film cameras I have been able to get for a song was a Ukrainian camera called the Kiev 60. It came with a complete line of lenses for a very low price on Ebay. The camera has definite quality issues, but I like the character of the some of the lenses.
The photo above was taken in Chatsworth, Illinois using the Kiev and an 80mm lens. The camera uses 120 film, which is medium format, and shoots in a square format called 6x6 because the negatives are six centimeters on a side. This result in a large, high quality negative.

Although my recent enthusiasm for shooting on film has been spurred in part by the medium format film cameras that have come into my possession, I still have a couple of 35mm Canon cameras that I can use as well. The advantage to the 35mm bodies is that they can use most of the lenses I have for my Canon DSLR's.
The photo above is of the old grain elevator in Lodge, Illinois. The photo was shot using a Canon EOS Elan II camera. I first bought an Elan II when it was introduced in the 1990's, at which point it cost hundreds of dollars. I bought this camera recently on Ebay for $27. Like I say, film cameras are cheap right now.
I shot this photo on badly expired film, which is why it is so grainy. I like the effect.

I have been experimenting with shooting on film recently. I like the aesthetic qualities of film, and used medium format film cameras have never been cheaper.
Last year I bought a Fuji GSW690 III medium format film camera. It shoots 120 size film in the 6x9 format, which has the same dimensions as 35mm film, but is four times larger. The larger negative provides vastly better resolution.
This is one of my first shots with the camera. the scene is one of my favorite places.

this is another shot of the Pacific Ocean at Pacific Grove, California, but this view is a little more brooding than the previous post. This is a fairly long exposure on film on a cloudy and stormy day. The photo has not been manipulated.

This photo was shot on film back in 1997. It was originally shot in color, but has been digitally converted to black and white. The scene is sunrise over Monterey Bay, taken at Lovers Point Park in Pacific Grove, California.

Pictures from the Pacific coast this week. This is an afternoon shot of the Yaquina Head Light just north of Newport, Oregon. This part of the Oregon coast is justifiably famous for its majestic, sweeping beaches and dramatic cliffs and outcroppings.

This week I'm posting photos from a recent trip to Chicago that allowed me to shoot from the 80th floor of the AON Building, the third tallest building in the city. Dirty windows and reflections created challenges, but it was a beautiful day, and I am pleased with the photos I got.
This view is to the north, with the Trump tower looming over the historic Wrigley Building in the lower left of the frame, and the John Hancock Building piercing the horizon in the upper right.

As I described in my last post, a work related function resulted in my getting a chance to shoot photos from the 80th floor of the AON Building in downtown Chicago. The windows were dirty, and it was hard to minimize reflections as daylight fell, but I am pleased with what I got.
This is a view to the west after dark, with the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) sticking up above the horizon on the left.

Last week I went to a work related event that was held in the Mid-America Club, which is on the 80th floor of the AON Building in the center of downtown Chicago. Since I always have a camera with me, in this case my trusty Canon G5 X, I was able to get some shots of the skyline from that unique vantage point. The windows of the building were far from clean, but the day was clear and beautiful, so it all averaged out.
This view is to the south, with the Art Institute at the bottom of the frame, surrounded by Grant Park. Beyond that you can see the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium, Soldier Field, and McCormick Place.

This is a nice view of the McKelvie National Forest in Cherry County, Nebraska. Like you, I too wonder where the forest part is. Still, it's a very pretty part of the country, if somewhat deserted.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Las Vegas surrounds Lake Mead, which is formed by the Hoover Dam. The recreation area is mostly desert, and a beautiful pLace to explore. This photo was taken in the spring, when the temperatures were mild and very few other visitors were present.

This photo is almost five years old, taken in October of 2012. The view is of the Missouri river from South Dakota side of Standing Bear Memorial Bridge, near the mouth of the Niobrara river. This is about ten miles southwest of Springfield, South Dakota.

We're having a mild winter here in East-Central Illinois. Having no snow on the ground in January or February is unusual, and it transforms the look of the countryside. This shot of a grain bin was taken near Mahomet, Illinois in February.
