Great Plains Week: Colorado

When people think of Colorado they think of the Rocky Mountains (among other things) but the eastern third of the state is high plains. This is the old grain elevator in Simla.

Great Plains Week: Nebraska

Some photos form the Great Plains this week. Starting off is a photo of the Ainsworth Canal in cherry County, Nebraska. This irrigation canal runs from the Merritt Reservoir on the Snake River northeast to irrigate fields over a wide area. The nearest town of any size is Valentine Nebraska, population 2000.

Pre-Fracking North Dakota

North Dakota countryside can be quite beautiful, as in this scene of an old barn located along the Enchanted Highway, in the western part of the state. The Enchanted Highway is a road that runs north from Regent, North Dakota, to I-94. It contains the worlds largest collection of outdoor metal sculpture, and is a very strange place. This photo was taken in 2009, just before fracking opened up the Bakken Oil fields and changed the face of the western part of the state.

The Road to Nowhere

This is South Dakota State Highway 53, in the south central part of the state. It is 33 miles of dirt road, running through some of the least populated parts of the state. Not a good place to have car trouble.

Annie's Parlour

The Dinkytown area on the edge of the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis is a funky area of stores and restaurants aimed at the campus trade. It is still there, but but had its heydey in the 1960s and 1970s. I lived near there in the mid-70s.  Annie's Parlour, pictured here, was, and is, a popular Dinkytown burger and milk shake place. This photo was shot in infrared on a visit there last year.

Illinois Surpise

East-Central Illinois is not all flat open fields, it just seems that way. This is a scene along the Middle Fork of the Vermillion River in Kickapoo State Recreation Area, near Danville.
