Wind Power

Here's a slightly moody view of a wind farm just east of Paxton, Illinois. The original photo is infrared, rendered in black and white.

Dust Devils

These are fields in western Washington, near Warden, on a hot July day. The columns that look like smoke are dust devils, which form when air near the ground is warmer than the air above, and rising air turns in a circular fashion. They are like tiny tornadoes, and although they look harmless they can pack a punch. One passed over me while I was taking these photos and nearly knocked me down.

The Portland Head Light

This is a photo of the Portland Head Light, a lighthouse guarding the entrance to Portland harbor in Maine. In the background is the Ram Island Light, which guards the other side of the channel in the extremely rocky waters around Portland.

Windmill on the Water: Slottsmöllan

The Slottsmöllan is an old windmill on the grounds of Malmo Castle in Malmo, on the southern tip of Sweden. It was a working mill up until the mid Twentieth century. This photo was shot from a boat cruising the canals around the castle, a popular way to see the sights of Malmo.

The Sinai Coast

This view is of the Gulf of Aqaba and the coast of the Sinai peninsula south of Eilat, Israel. This spot is in Egypt, but at the time of this photo, 1974, it was occupied by Israel.

Midwest Agribusiness

This is sort of an iconic Midwestern view. Train tracks, grain silos, wide open skies. I've always loved to photograph scenes like this. I'm not sure why.

Hoar Frost

Hoar frost forms when fog surrounds trees and other objects and the temperature is below freezing. The effect can be stunningly beautiful. This shot was taken in Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Almost Spring

This is what the countryside in East-Central Illinois looks like right now. Nothing is really showing any green yet, but the weather is wonderful (it's in the mid 70s as I write this). I'm sure the countryside will burst into vibrant color any day now. I can't wait.

Station Cove Falls

Back to autumn for the second time this week. This is view of the Station Cove Falls, part of the Oconee Station State Historic Site in northwest South Carolina. It's a beautiful place any time of the year, but especially in the fall with all the color.

In Kansas

Summer in Kansas, with trees. I guess you either love this kind of thing, or you don't.

Smoky Mountains

I guess I'm feeling contrarian, but as the weather gets nice I've been looking back at pictures of autumn. Here's a view of the Smoky Mountains in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, taken in late November.

This is a view of fall foliage from far western Virginia, on U.S. 52 just south of the West Virginia line, and north of Wytheville.

Cloud Gate

Most people who visit Chicago stop by the wonderful Millennium Park, and take a look at Cloud Gate, the prominent sculpture known locally as "The Bean." Here it is in black and white, with a nice bit of flare from the sun on top.
