For some reason when I am out taking photos, there is nothing I love more than a simple row of trees in the countryside. This particular stand is on the grounds of Allerton Park, just outside Monticello, Illinois.

This is a nice autumn shot looking out through the gate of the Higashi Honganji Temple in Central Kyoto. I love the colors on the trees. This is from November of 2006.

This is a view of the Northeast Georgia Mountains, taken from the Popcorn Overlook in the Chattahoochee National Forest, about 15 miles west of Clayton, Georgia.

I know that I complain about winter a lot. I should just move, I guess. Anyway, one of the advantages of a large photography collection is the ability to find nice summer photos to look at when the wind and snow howl outside. This is a sunset just south of Philo, Illinois, on a summer evening. Some people might not approve of the electrical wires in the shot, but I like them.

As I write, I'm still homebound in the cold and snow (hopefully I won't be by the time you read this). So as an antidote to the cold I decided to find a nice summer picture to post. This is a scene on the Lower Brule Indian Reservation, southeast of Pierre, South Dakota.

Above is a photo of Washington Square in Dubuque, Iowa, rendered as a painting, taken on what I remember was a very cold January evening. It seemed appropriate for the weather right now.
I'm writing this post in the middle of a bonafide blizzard. Up to 12 inches of snow today, and tomorrow a high temperature of -11 with strong winds. Winters in East-Central Illinois aren't usually like this. I moved here from Minnesota to get away from this kind of thing, but I guess I didn't move far enough.
Below is another of my favorite winter pictures, this one taken in Urbana, Illinois. Winter can be pretty, but here's hoping it doesn't linger too long.

The photo above is of the old courthouse in Metamora, Illinois, fronted by a statute of Abraham Lincoln, along with some lady whose name I didn't recognize.
Central Illinois abounds with Lincoln memorabilia, since Lincoln practiced law here before becoming president. Metamora, just a few miles northeast of Peooria, was the county seat of Woodford County from 1843 to 1896, and was the place that Lincoln would work when traveling on the Illinois 8th Circuit.
Although Metamora is no longer the county seat, it has preserved the courthouse where lincoln practiced, which is now a state historic site and museum. It is one of only two courthouse buildings still standing from Lincoln's time. Metamora is a beautiful little town with some nice art galleries and shops around its central square. If you are ever in central Illinois it would be worth a visit, especially if you are a Lincoln buff.

Welcome to 2014. I hope it's a good year for all of us. Above is a sunset view I took this past Sunday just north of Carlock in central Illinois.
My photography resolutions for 2014 are pretty general: More photography, more travel, more memories. I can't ask for much more than that.
