Favorite Places #2: Cherry County Nebraska

I've decided to choose my five favorite places to travel to. I define "favorite" as a place I've been that fascinated me, and that I'd like to return to.

My second favorite place to re-visit is Cherry County Nebraska. This one may be a tough sell for most people, but I have to go with my heart. Cherry County, which is bigger is size than Connecticut, is one of the least populated places in America. Valentine, with 2000 people, is only one town of any size at all. So what's the appeal?

Cherry county is at the center of the sand hills, a vast undulating grasslands that epitomize the open west of this country. To me the openness, and the emptiness, are the appeal.

There is lots of natural beauty in Cherry County, no matter what season of the year, and the vast openness really struck a chord in me. I hope to go back again.

Favorite Places # 3: Provence

I've decided to choose my five favorite places to travel to. I define "favorite" as a place I've been that fascinated me, and that I'd like to return to.

Number three on my list is the south of France, particularly Provence. France has so much to offer in the way of history, culture, food, wine, and beautiful cities and countryside that it's hard to pick just one part of the country as a favorite. Still, while I love all of France, Provence, particularly along the coast, has a special magic all its own.

I am particularly partial to the stretch of coastline from Villefranche-sur-Mer east of Nice to Cavalaire-sur-Mer west of St. Tropez. Above is a view of Villefranche-sur-Mer with the harbor in the background.

In spite of raving about the coast, the rest of Provence is equally inviting. Wonderful weather and beautiful countryside are everywhere. Below is a view of Aix-en-Provence, a city bursting with culture and beauty.

Favorite Places # 4: Colorado and Utah

I've decided to choose my five favorite places to travel to. I define "favorite" as a place I've been that fascinated me, and that I'd like to return to.

Number 4 on my list is actually two contiguous states--Colorado and Utah. My mother was raised in Colorado, so I've been going there since I was a kid, but I only recently got around to visiting Utah. The two states together provide an incredible range of natural beauty that can only be described as awe-inspiring. Having been to Utah once I really want to go again, and having visited Colorado many, many times, I know I will never tire of going there.

Above is a view of Canyonlands National Park, in southeast Utah. Below, a shot of the Sawatch range in the central Colorado Rockies. Natural beauty at its best.

Favorite Places #5: Copenhagen

I've decided to choose my five favorite places to travel to. I define "favorite" as a place I've been that fascinated me, and that I'd like to return to.

First up, in place number 5, is Copenhagen Denmark. The picture above was taken in the famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park in the heart of Copenhagen. Copenhagen had wonderful food, lots of culture, interesting architecture, and friendly people. I really enjoyed visiting, and I'd like to return.

Post 500

This it it: the 500th post on PDH Photo. Here are my two favorite shots from the first 500 posts.

First is a black and white view of the stunning Monument Valley, one of nature's great masterworks, posted on January 25th 2012.

Finally, I have chosen this view of the City of Chicago, posted on March 10, 2010, as my favorite photo of the first 500 posts. It's the kind of photo that I aspire to as a photographer, but rarely achieve. Luckily for me, the joy in this hobby rests in learning and striving for this kind of moment.

I have really enjoyed posting on this blog over the last couple of years. I hope to post another 500 posts, if not more. I hope you're enjoying it as well. Thanks for looking!

Post 499

This is the penultimate post to the 500th post on this blog. In honor of that landmark, I'm posting my favorite shots from the first 500 posts.

Let's start with a Thanksgiving Day (or eve, rather) picture of the CU Astronomical Society's observatory southwest of Champaign Illinois. The star streaks are the result of combining about 75 photos. Posted on November 25th, 2011.

Next, One of my favorite views of North Dakota grasslands from 2009 (before the oil boom), posted June 23, 2010. The cloud at the center is raining slightly, but the rain is evaporating before hitting the ground.

On Wednesday, post 500!

Post 498

Continuing on to post 500, here are three of my favorite shots from previous posts.

First, the Continental Divide at Berthoud Pass, in the Colorado Rockies. This shot was posted on February 18, 2011.

Next, a view from closer to home (at least for me). This is the Quad on the campus of the University Illinois in Urbana Champaign on a nice fall day. That's Foellenger Auditorium in the background. Posted on March 4, 2010.

Finally, for today, a night view of Monument Valley in Arizona. The star streaks are a result of the 48 minute exposure required to get the shot. Posted on November 5, 2010.

Countdown to 500

This is post 493 on this blog. I'm getting close to 500 posts. To celebrate that landmark I've spent some time combing through all those posts looking for my very favorite photos. From now until June 19th, when I post number 500, I will be reposting my favorites.

Here are the first three:

First is one of my very first posts, from February of 2010. It shows the Washington Square gazebo in Dubuque Iowa on a cold winter night.

Next, an old barn by moonlight, from a post in January of 2012.

Finally, from a post on March 18, 2011, a view of the garden of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, Japan.
