Photo of the Day

Here we have an admittedly impressionistic night photo of the Heinz Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA. The framing of the bare tree limbs give the shot a moodiness that I like.

Photo of the Day

This is a black and white photo of the First Torii at Naiku, the Inner Shrine of the Ise Grand Shrine complex in Ise, Japan. This is on the path to the Shoden, or inner sanctum, of the shrine. Off to the right is access to the sacred Suzuki River, where pilgrims can engage in ritual ablutions before proceeding to the Shoden.

Photo of the Day

This is a view of an old well, with a bamboo covering, on the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, Japan. The green moss on the well contrasts nicely with the bright red of the maple leaves (it was November). I rendered it as a painting to bring out the colors.

Travel spot: The Old Cemetery, St. Tropez

St Tropez, France, is famous for celebrities and glitz, but it is an old port town with a 16th Century citadel and a beautiful cemetery. The cemetery, officially known as Cimetière marin de Saint Tropez, sits nestled next to the ocean, at the bottom of the hill below the citadel.

French cemeteries tend to be ornate by American standards, with large tombstones and lots of decorations, and this one is no exception. The decorations range from devotional plaques and "permanent" flowers, seen above, to home-made decorations as seen below.

There are also some elaborate carvings, like this life-sized relief:

Some graves are quite unique. Below is the marker for the French music producer and record label owner Eddie Barclay.

Here is a view of the cemetery from near the citadel on top of the hill. Both the citadel and the cemetery are worth a visit if you go to St. Tropez.

Photo of the Day

Here is an abandoned shake (at least I hope it's abandoned) in central South Carolina. The forest was busy reclaiming it.

Photo of the Day

A busy evening street scene in Kyoto, rendered as a painting. It shows the intersection of Hanamikoji Dori and Shijo Dori, which is the very heart of the exclusive Gion entertainment district, and where Japan's most exclusive geisha establishments are located.

Photo of the Day

Today's photo is a panorama of the countryside near Urbana, Illinois. Just to the right, outside the frame of the photo, is a Walmart Supercenter, with all its attendant sprawl. It just goes to show that, in photography as in life, framing is everything.

Photo of the Day

This is a photo of part of the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado. I took the photo in 1985 on film (of course) and recently converted it to black and white. The figure climbing the dune at top left gives you a sense of the scale of the place.
