Strange Little Houses

I've always been fascinated by small, strange, apparently occupied houses, and when I stumble across one, I try to get a picture. Here are a few, for your edification. The little house above is in Lime Springs, Iowa, near the Minnesota border. I used to drive through Lime Springs on trips to see family, and couldn't help but notice such a strange place.

The little place above is, or was, in Champaign, Illinois. It is gone now, and it's not hard to see why. I used to live in the neighborhood, and walked by it every day on my way to and from work.

I also walked by this place, below, which was a few houses down from the (larger) house I was renting at the time. I'm curious who builds such places, and why.

Photo of the Day

Sort of a moody picture today; Leaves, still attached at the stem, on the pavement. The color is not as manipulated as you might think.

Another view of the fall countryside, here in black and white to emphasize the wonderful clouds.

Photo of the Day

At mid-September I can just begin to feel the seasons change. The very faintest feeling of fall is in the air. I love fall; it's my favorite season. To commemorate the change, here is a shot of an old equipment barn and grain bin at sunset in the fall, rendered as a painting. The barn is just south of Mahomet, IL.

Kyoto at Night in Black and White

I've been working on converting some of my night photos into black and white. I'm particularly interested in a sort of street photography look, with stark flash. These are shots from Kyoto Japan that I've been working on. Above is a geisha house in the Gion district with an amazing tree growing right up out of it.

Here is a shop front and a passerby. Below is a strange shot of electric wires and signs--just the kind of thing I like. Is it art? Who knows.

Tea Ceremony

Here's a highly stylized picture of a woman in Kyoto performing the tea ceremony.

Mixzed media

I've been playing with using the painting effect on photos, but applying it to only part of the photo, leaving the rest "real" ("live"? "unmanipulated"? "unmolested"? I'm not sure what the right adjective is here). I have a ways to go with this, but so far I like it. Above is a small waterfall at the Sensoji Temple in Tokyo.

Below is a shot of the Ueno train station in Tokyo, with the buildings in the distance rendered in the painting affect, but the nearer details left alone. If you look closely, you'll see that I have tried to (clumsily) render the people in the scene in monotone. I'm working on that too.
